Sandwich bottom unit for automobil manufacture
1963-67
Hans Gugelot with gugelot-institut
One of Gugelot's last activities and likewise the most extensive one is the design of an entirely new plastics bottom unit for cars which lasted for approximately four years until finished at the end of 1996 by the Institut Gugelot. It was presented at Hannover Fair in 1967.
A sports car conception was chosen. Sports cars are heavily tested, critically studied – they achieve the grade of publicity that is due to their state of the art.
Forms and prototypes were made by Waggonfabrik Donauwörth, cars wer given and test were carried out by BMW.
The aim was a single-piece self-feeding, accident-proof. corrosion-proof and non-droning body which is light as well as solid. Moreover it should be built with low tool costs and be a base for an experimental car.
The body is a sandwich construction: Two imbued thin-walled glass fibre reinforced plastic trays friction-locked glued to a hollow body foamed by polyurethane foam material.
